The word “parquet” is a diminutive of the word “park” used to designate the enclosure surrounding the wooden platform where the king’s magistrates were seated. Until the end of the 16th century, floors were made of stone in order to be washed more easily. From the Renaissance onwards, wooden floors, were an assembly of wooden strips. Indeed, the french word ” plancher ” designates a ground made of hardwood planks, very often oak or softwood. The parquet floor, on the other hand, was reserved for the aristocracy because of its decorative character, the strips are thinner and assembled by tenons and mortises. Each parquet floor takes its name from the castle in which it was first laid, such as the Versailles, the Chantilly, the Arenberg parquet floors.
